The intent of the Shoreland Zoning Ordinance update is to assure compliance with the objectives of Shoreland Zoning enabling statute 59.692 and to parallel as closely as possible the regulatory provisions of ch. NR 115, Wis. Adm. Code, which establishes minimum Shoreland Zoning Ordinance standards.
The present Shoreland Zoning Ordinance for Kewaunee County was adopted in 1969 and most recently revised 1992. The current ordinance includes the requirements of NR 115, Wisconsin's Shoreland Protection Program, and satisfies Section 59.692 Wisconsin Statutes. However, in November 2009, the State of Wisconsin updated NR 115 to better protect lakes and rivers, while allowing property owners more flexibility on their land. Updating the Shoreland Zoning will provide Kewaunee County with an ordinance that will aid in the protection of its water resources, wildlife habitat, and overall quality of life. The new minimum shoreland zoning standards of the updated NR 115 must be in place by February 1, 2014.
